Take a Pain Reliever as You Need It
When you get braces, you may notice some slight discomfort within the first few days. Braces begin to shift your teeth into place as soon as you start wearing them. You will eventually get used to this sensation, but it may be awkward and uncomfortable at first. To help alleviate any discomfort you may have, take an over-the-counter pain reliever as you think you need it within the first few days after getting braces.
Try to Only Eat Soft Foods
After you get braces, you essentially have to learn how to eat again. It may feel strange to eat anything at first, but you can start out with soft foods to help you adjust. Soft foods, such as scrambled eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, bananas, and smoothies, are some great examples of what you can eat without the need to chew a lot in the first week.
Always Use Your Braces Wax
When you get braces, you should also receive some braces wax to use as you need it. Braces wax helps protect the inside of your mouth from the irritation caused by the metal hardware. At first, you may notice feelings of scraping inside your cheeks and on your tongue. Eventually, your mouth will adjust, and you will hardly notice any irritation. Until that adjustment happens, the wax can help. You simply apply the wax on your braces in any areas where you feel irritation.
Gargle with Salt Water
To help with any soreness in your mouth within the first week of getting braces, you can gargle with some salt water. Dissolve a small spoonful of salt into a glass of warm water. The salt and the warmth of the water will be able to soothe your mouth and help facilitate the healing of any sores or discomfort.
Braces are a milestone for anyone, but they can take some time to get used to. If you feel any discomfort, know that it is temporary. The long-term reward is a beautiful smile and a healthier mouth.
